No appeal for Swedish sniper who shot immigrants

STOCKHOLM –  Sweden's Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal by a gunman sentenced to life in prison for a series of sniper attacks that spread fear among immigrants in the southern city of Malmo.

Peter Mangs, who was arrested in November 2010, was convicted by a lower court of two murders and eight attempted murders after authorities linked him to a string of previously unsolved shootings since 2003. Most of the victims had immigrant backgrounds.

Claiming innocence, the 41-year-old Mangs appealed to the Supreme Court, Sweden's highest court, but the panel on Tuesday said it found no reason to grant him a hearing, meaning his life sentence will stand.

The court normally only hears cases that set a precedent or when previous trials are considered flawed.
