BANGKOK – Investigators in Laos say they have retrieved a cockpit voice recorder from a Lao Airlines plane that crashed into the Mekong River this month, killing all 49 people on board.
Lao aviation official Yakua Lopangkao says the device was recovered from the river Thursday but a digital flight data recorder is still missing.
Both devices are needed for an investigation.
The ATR-72 turboprop plane crashed Oct. 16 during a heavy storm as it approached the Pakse airport in southern Laos.
Strong currents and deep, muddy water have hampered the search.
The airline said in a statement Wednesday that 47 bodies and human remains have been found so far.
