Freed hostages head back to France for emotional homecoming

PARIS –  Four Frenchmen held hostage by al-Qaida militants for three years in the African Sahel are returning home to France.

Images on French television showed the four — Pierre Legrand, Thierry Dol, Marc Feret and Daniel Larribe — boarding a plane in the capital of Niger, where France's foreign and defense minsters flew to meet them.

President Francois Hollande and their families will meet the men at a military airport outside Paris later Wednesday in what is expected to be an emotional homecoming.

Alain Legrand told French television that he was thrilled at his son's release but wanted to know how and why he was taken hostage. At the time of their capture, the four were working in Arlit, Niger, where the French nuclear giant Areva operates a uranium mine.
