Dominican president, activists discuss ruling that strips citizenship from migrant children

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic –  The president of the Dominican Republic has met with a small group of activists who are fighting against a court ruling that strips citizenship from the children of migrant workers.

Ana Maria Belique is the spokeswoman for a nonprofit group that has fought for the rights of children born in the Dominican Republic to Haitian migrant workers. She says the Monday meeting with President Danilo Medina offered a "glimmer of hope" for the activists.

The Dominican Republic's Constitutional Court ruled last month that it will block citizenship for thousands of people born to migrant workers since 1929. This could affect over 200,000 people.

United Nations officials met with Medina last month and asked him to meet with the activists.

Neighboring Haiti says the court decision violates international laws and agreements.
