Muslim guerrilla leader charged with rebellion for bloody 3-week Philippine hostage crisis

MANILA, Philippines –  Philippine police have filed a complaint of rebellion and violation of international humanitarian law against Muslim guerrilla leader Nur Misuari in connection with a three-week deadly standoff between government troops and insurgents who held scores of people hostage.

More than 200 people and nearly 10,000 houses were burned in the fighting that followed the rebel attempt to storm Zamboanga city hall in the southern Philippines on Sept. 9.

Regional state prosecutor Peter Medalle said Thursday he filed a complaint against Misuari and some 80 of his followers. So far, more than 200 rebels have been charged.

Misuari is not in custody. He is the leader of a faction of the Moro National Liberation Front, which signed a 1996 peace agreement then accused the Philippine government of failing to honor it.
